@WalletConnect has changed from a simple QR code reader to an important part of Web3. Here is the path so far and what comes next:
🔸Milestones
- 2018 → Pedro Gomes started it. WalletConnect v1 came out with a QR code that linked a wallet to a dApp.
- 2021 → v2 came out with multi-chain, persistent pairing, Waku p2p relays, and a better user experience.
- 2023 → v1 is no longer available. The whole ecosystem moves to v2. New features include push notifications and one-click authentication.
- 2024 → The WalletConnect Foundation was set up. Third-party nodes added (Ledger, ConsenSys, Figment, etc.). The first airdrop and announcement of the WCT token. The WalletGuide and Certified Wallet programs are now live.
- 2025 → $WCT listed on top exchanges (April 15). Governance kicks off. Smart Sessions + Chain Abstraction roadmap revealed. Partnerships expand (Telegram MiniApps, Optimism, Stripe).
🔮 What's Coming
- More node operators who work on their own.
- Incentives that can grow through $WCT staking and rewards.
- Full chain abstraction means that users won't have to worry about which blockchain they're on.
- Changes to the user experience (UX) that make Web3 easier to use, like Web2.
👉 #WalletConnect is becoming the "HTTP of Web3". $WCT will be used for governance and incentives, making the network a permanent part of onchain UX.
